In Everything, Give Thanks
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It’s not because of football, and I don’t really love turkey all that much. I love family more than almost anything, but every holiday is a potential chance to be together. I love Thanksgiving because you can’t buy gratitude, and that’s what this holiday represents.
The Bible doesn’t say to give thanks in some things. Nor does it say to give thanks in good things. Rather, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us that God’s will for Christians is that we should give thanks in all things. To be fair, Paul isn’t writing about a holiday, either. Just as he doesn’t say “pray when you need something” in verse 17, he also doesn’t say “be thankful at certain points throughout the year.”
In the Old Testament, followers of God often set up stones (or piles of them) as physical reminders of God’s faithfulness. Jacob does this in Genesis 28:10-22 to remember the vision he received from God. The twelve tribes did this in Joshua 4:1-9 to remember how God brought them over the Jordan river on dry ground. Samuel does this as well in 1 Samuel 7:7-12 to remind everyone of God’s miraculous defeat of the Philistines. Why? Because we as human beings need such reminders.
You probably don’t set up rocks in your yard to help you remember to be thankful for specific things. But we do have Thanksgiving, memorialized on our calendars, to remind us to be thankful for all things. Chiefly, Christ’s death on the cross to pay for our sins. So when you sit around the table (or wherever) for Thanksgiving, use it as a reminder of God’s faithfulness as we give thanks . . . in ALL things.
