The Verses Dad Circled
When Dad passed away last year, I took his Bible. He had been very proud of it because the cover was made from buffalo leather, and the large print made it easier for him to read with his eyesight troubles caused by two brain surgeries. I didn’t see any notes, so I assumed that it was too new for him to have written anything in it. But I was wrong.

As I thumbed through the New Testament, I found a page with pen ink on it. The passage was Romans 8, and Dad had circled verse 24: “For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?” This discovery rocked me, so let me impress its significance on you in this way: Ephesians 2:8 had neither circle nor star. Even John 3:16 sat unmarked. Here, in Dad’s darkest hours, he chose to focus on HOPE.
The greek word used here is ἐλπίς (elpís), and it doesn’t mean wishful thinking. In the Bible, HOPE means the expectation of something. Hebrews 6 describes the hope we have in God’s promises as an “anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast…” (Hebrews 6:19). Dad’s hope (read: “expectation”) was in something that his physical eyes could not yet see: the redemption of his body, which was at that time drawing near. Even as he fought for his life, Dad rested in God’s promises. Verse 28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Notice that it doesn’t say all things “will” work together for good. God isn’t waiting on deck taking practice swings. God isn’t standing by to work at some future point. He is working right now. Likewise, Christ didn’t tell his disciples that he “would” overcome the world. He said “I have overcome the world,” (John 16:33). We can have HOPE in the guarantee that we have through Christ that what he says is as good as done, even if we haven’t seen it yet. If you have trusted Christ for everlasting life, then you can trust Him with everything else too!
BIG MINISTRY UPDATES
Josiah, Benjamin, Bethany and Janet just got back from the Texas tour!
Here are some of the things that happened there:
Josiah preached at Grace Community Church of Pharr and Lake Country Bible Church in Mineola, two supporting church communities. Josiah was also the keynote speaker at Spring Camp in the Texas Hill country. (This is the camp where Janet and Freddie met for the first time!)
People trusted Christ as they heard and understood the sweet message of HOPE! We can almost hear Heaven rejoicing with us! Others dedicated their lives to God’s service, and many saw God’s Word come to life in a way that they never have before.
Grace Farm events are filling up! Camp remains a spectacularly effective way to help people quiet the everyday noise of life and focus on what God is trying to teach them. Registration is open, so bring your friends! Visit gracefarmonline.com.
Other travel will be keeping Josiah busy, and he is honored to speak at so many places and events where Freddie did. If you would like to invite him to speak at a church, camp, or other event, you can visit femionline.com and click the “book now” link.
The Focus YouTube channel passed 900 subscribers! It continues to grow as Josiah works on new content every week. If you haven’t subscribed, what are you waiting for? Click here!
PRAYER REQUESTS
Please pray with us that. . .
God would bless all the people who have blessed us in our travels in allowing us to share the gospel.
Grace Farm’s Summer Events would go well, and that campers would put their faith in Jesus Christ and desire to grow in grace with Him.
God would comfort Janet as she continues to cope with the loss of Freddie. The pain of loss takes its toll.
We would be instruments of God’s righteousness.
Thank you, we love you, and God bless you.
Labouring in Hope (earnest expectation),
Josiah Coile
